In the United States, 4.5 pounds of waste are generated per person each day. The U.S. is the number one municipal solid waste generator in the industrialized world, while Canada is the second with 3.75 pounds per person and the Netherlands is third at 3.0 pounds. Thirty one percent of our Nation's waste stream is "recycled" and 14% is incinerated, generally to generate energy for area homes and businesses and to reduce trash volume.
